When Your Hard-work Starts to Pay Off

I have huge aspirations for myself this year. January 1 started with a list of goals that I was bound and determined to accomplish. My first goal was to become a Legionnaire with 1stPhorm. For those of you that don’t know, 1stPhorm is a sports supplement company. I have used a lot of supplements on my journey to become the best me possible and they are by far the best I have used. Now my goals have grown and I am doing more and more to take myself out of my comfort zone. I decided that I wanted to help as many people as possible. This led me to becoming a certified personal trainer. I’m not quite there yet, but I am enrolled and taking courses and within the next 3-4 months I will be certified. I am also working on getting a full sponsorship from 1stPhorm now.

I bring all this up because even with the success I have been able to attain this year I always wonder if I am making the impact that I need to make so people start to recognize who I am. I wonder daily if I am going to succeed and just when I think my efforts have all been in vain one of the greatest things, in my opinion anyways, that could happen happens. I log onto my Instagram account and there is a photo that I have posted that has been seen and liked by the CEO of 1stPhorm Andy Frisella. To some this is no big deal, but to me it was an amazing moment.

The point of all of this is to show that even if you feel like you are not making an impact, you are. Stay the course and keep doing the right things and the results you want will come. Whether it is in business, fitness, life, or whatever it is that drives you, keep grinding away and the results will come. Keep making 2017 your best year yet!!

What is it the motivates you?

We all have internal and external factors that motivate us. Our external factors usually involve material wants. More money, a bigger house, a new car, etc. While all these things are fine to use as motivation, remember that they are material and that they will fade over time. I want to talk about your internal drive. These are the things that cannot be taken from you. They are your hopes, dreams, and desires. When looking to utilize either type of motivator, think about what is more important. Is it more important to have something that you will just want to trade in in a couple of years or something that cannot be bought and sold?images

Why does this even matter in the first place? It matters because we are all destined for our own greatness. No one was placed on this earth to just exist. We are amazing beings with greatness in every single one of us. Now not all of us will be billionaires, but that is okay. You may not even want that much money. Not all of us will be business owners. Some of us enjoy just having a job. These, however, should not limit your own personal desires to do great things in your life. Therefore, you must find your internal drive.

Your internal drive, or fire some call it, will propel you to this personal greatness. The first thing you must do is find it. What exactly is it that keeps you going? Why do you get out of bed in the morning? For every single person, it is different. The only thing that matters is that you find it. When you feel like you can’t keep going or that you are too tired to do anything else, you can harness this extra energy and continue to push forward. Finding my fire has helped me to set my goals higher than I ever dreamed possible. It has motivated me to begin the process of starting my own business. I’m going back to school. I read more, and all of this after I work a 10-hour shift. I’m not saying this to brag. I’m saying this to demonstrate that once you find that fire, your body and mind can do amazing things.

Take the next few days and think about what you want out of life. After you have set a couple of goals, start thinking about why these are your goals. Once you have those two questions answered find that fire and fuel it. Use it to drive you to greatness and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.

Personal Transformation

img_1098These before and after pictures or from May 2016 – December 2016. Even though my transformation had started August 2015, I lost focus a year later and while I wasn’t as bad as I was before I still had to transform myself again.

The scariest part of any transformation or life change is the fear of failure. When I began my physical transformation in August of 2015 I didn’t take a single picture of what I looked like. Aside from being embarrassed, I had tried this before and failed and had those pictures to remind me of the failures. I was already setting myself up for failure in thinking that I had tried this once and this time it would just end the same. This type of defeatist attitude was only counterproductive. I was able to start with good momentum regardless. I was meal prepping on the weekend, I was going to the gym (which was terrifying), and was following a workout routine. Regardless of all of that though, the thought of failure was always lingering over me. It was gnawing at me, it continued to tell me that I was only going to fail again, that I wasn’t good enough and that I should just give up.

I know this isn’t the way that most would start an article like this, but I ‘ve never been one to follow the norms. Most would post how they hit the ground running and never looked back, that they felt great and saw instant change in every aspect of their lives. While some of that is true for some people, in my experience, it is very rare. Most people deal with the same anxiety and doubt that I felt. The first week is painful. It is full of fear of going to the gym and “not fitting in”, it is the DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), it’s the monotony of grilled chicken and steamed vegetables, and the drastic change to your daily life.

Now that I’ve gotten the negatives out of the way let’s look at the positives. When your body transforms, it can transform your life. It is a great feeling when in you start seeing results. Your clothes fit better, you have more energy and people start to tell you that you look great. You are lowering the risks of heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. You are reversing the clock on aging. Give me a day and I’ll show you achievement, a month and I’ll show you results, give me 3 months and I’ll change your life. I will never tell you that this is going to be easy. It takes hard work, discipline and determination. There are going to be days that you don’t want to go to the gym, but you must fight that and go. There will be days that you want to cheat on your diet, but you have to stay committed. This is your life and it is worth fighting for. Don’t wait another day to start. Find a plan and get committed because nobody else can want this but you.

On a final note, this is not something that you can do for a few months and stop. This is transforming your life and leaving the old you behind. Don’t make the mistakes that I made. Take before pictures and don’t doubt your abilities. Stick to the plan and it will work. Keep making 2017 your best year ever!!

To Supplement Or Not To Supplement? That Is The Question.

When it comes to starting your fitness journey the first question is, “What supplements should I be taking?” Well, I am here to give you the answer, and the answer is “none”. Let’s start by looking at the definition of supplements. Webster defines supplements as, “something that completes or makes an addition.” The best example I can think of is the term supplemental income. You have your main job and you supplement it by doing something extra on the side. Dietary supplements are no different. Your main focus should be your diet to give yourself a solid foundation, and then you add supplements to give you that little extra.

A quick background story. I played High School football and was obsessed with getting stronger and faster than everyone. This mentality caused me to be on a constant search for the next pill or powder that would give me that edge. Unfortunately for me, this led to irresponsible and dangerous supplementing. I never took anything illegal, but the FDA does not regulate supplements and most of the ones I was taking are now banned. I didn’t read the labels and only went by the claims that these supplements made. This was a dangerous way to learn that a proper diet would have been much more beneficial.

The above picture is my kitchen counter and those are my supplements. Now I know what you are thinking, “This guy just told me to not take supplements and he has bottles and bottles of them on his counter.” There is a reason for this. My fitness journey has been going on for two years now. I have a very solid diet foundation and I do not take all of these on a daily basis. I use them for what they are designed for, and that is to fill in the gaps where my diet falls short. I have learned that there is no magic pill or powder that will get me to my weight loss/muscle gain goals. To reach those goals I focus on the whole foods that I eat on a daily basis and try to get all my nutrients from them.

So let’s get to the fun part. Maybe you have been working out for a while now and want to dive into using supplements, to take yourself to the next level. Like with your diet you need a solid foundation and that begins with a quality multi-vitamin. Most of us do not get the recommended 3-5 servings of vegetables a day to cover our micro-nutrient requirements. This is where a multi-vitamin fills those gaps. When looking for a multi-vitamin try to find something in a capsulated form. These are much easier for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients because the capsule breaks down very quickly so your body is not trying to process a hard pressed tablet. Next is a fish/Omega-3 oil. As with not getting enough fibrous vegetables, most of us are not willing to eat 8 ounces of fatty fish a week. Once again this is where a supplement is beneficial to fill the gap. Omega-3s have been shown, when combined with diet and exercise, to increase fat loss by up to 25%. They are also essential in brain function and heart health.

This is by no means all-encompassing and there is so much more that can be said about supplements. But I feel it is a good start if someone asks you about dietary supplementation. Be sure that you check with you doctor before taking anything that may have adverse effects with any other medication you take regularly.
